Mia bit her tongue until she tasted blood. Sitting in the passenger’s seat while Aiden drove toward the police station at maniac speeds, she couldn’t remember a time when she’d ever witnessed the SSA so intense. He was holding himself together, but judging from his repetitive jaw flexing, white-knuckle grip on the steering wheel, and crimson-flushed face, she doubted he’d be able to do so for much longer.

Her stomach rolled as Aiden took a corner at top speed. Yet it wasn’t just her boss’s driving that was making her ill.

She’d been calling and texting Chris incessantly to no avail. Her original mindset had been that if he picked up for any of them, she would be that person. Apparently, it made no difference at all.

He’d been off lately. Abnormal. The back and forth of his moods had reminded her of someone struggling to keep popping their head above dark waters, even though it was clear they were going to drown.

There was good in Chris, but Mia was aware of the hatred within him as well. The cumulation of every horrible word he’d ever spoken about Autumn amassed in Mia’s mind like a brain tumor.

“I worked my way into this BAU. I didn’t just fly in on a fluffy ‘teacher’s pet’ cloud.”

“Well, here we go again, bowing down at the throne of Autumn Trent. So damn good to have her back.”

“Aiden Parrish has his head shoved so far up Autumn’s…”

“After somebody figures out how messed up and wrong Parrish’s favoritism is, all it takes is the right person in the right position of power to get rid of one of them. Or both of them, if we’re really lucky.”

Chris had been hateful and suspiciously friendly to Autumn in turns as of late. And while he’d opened up to Mia on a deep level, something had kept him from continuing to explore that. He’d been distracted. Torn, even.

She recalled Autumn’s first day back from Quantico. He’d been ranting about Autumn as per usual, but he’d said something to Mia that had set her nerves on a particular edge.

“…there are always consequences for treating other people like pieces of human shit.”

He hadn’t made the statement in a basic, observational manner. There’d been a hunger in his tone. A gnawing desire for vengeance, as though he’d needed to witness Autumn’s penance.

Last came the memory of Chris’s question after they’d caught the couple-slaying killer in D.C. He’d appeared to absolutely loathe himself for a moment, and he’d asked…

“Mia, what would you say if I told you that I understand why Brooke Leonard did what she did?”

Assuming that Chris had been referring to his rough childhood, Mia had only experienced compassion for him at the question. He’d been able to empathize with Brooke’s challenging upbringing, and Mia had found the sentiment touching.

She now wondered if he’d been relating to a different aspect of what Brooke had done. The woman had desperately wanted revenge, and at some point, she’d decided that she was going to take it. She’d fully immersed herself in a dark vendetta.
